Hand brake cable
A parking cable, also called a hand brake cable, connects the hand brake lever to your rear brakes. When you pull the lever, the parking cable tightens to hold the vehicle in place. It’s important because it prevents rolling on slopes and adds an extra safety backup to your main braking system.
Common signs your parking cable needs replacement include a loose or spongy hand brake lever, the vehicle rolling when parked on an incline, or needing to pull the lever very high to engage. You may also notice uneven braking at the rear. If you see these symptoms, have the parking cable inspected promptly.
You can technically drive with a faulty parking cable, but it’s unsafe and not recommended. Without a reliable parking brake, your car can roll when parked on slopes, during emergency stops, or if the primary brakes fail. Replace the damaged parking cable quickly to maintain proper safety and control.
The lifespan of a parking cable depends on driving conditions, climate, and maintenance. On average, it can last many years, but exposure to moisture, road salt, and dirt can cause corrosion and wear. Regular inspections during service and prompt replacement when stiff, rusty, or stretched help ensure reliable performance.
Replacing a parking cable at home is possible if you have basic tools, follow your vehicle’s service manual, and are comfortable working under the car. You’ll need to safely lift and support the vehicle. If you’re unsure or lack experience, it’s better to have a professional mechanic perform the installation.
