Rinse the rice 2–3 times under running water. Soak for 20–30 minutes for softer, longer grains. Use a 1:2 rice-to-water ratio for most dishes. Cook on low to medium flame until water is absorbed. Let it rest covered for 5–10 minutes, then fluff gently with a fork.

For biryani, long-grain rice with firm, non-sticky texture works best. Choose premium rice where each grain stays separate after cooking, giving layers of flavour and aroma. Proper rinsing, soaking and correct water ratio also matter to achieve restaurant-style biryani at home.

To keep rice from turning sticky, rinse it 2–3 times to remove excess starch, then soak for about 20–30 minutes. Use the right water ratio, usually 1 cup rice to 2 cups water, and cook on low to medium flame. Allow it to rest, then fluff gently with a fork.

Basmati rice has extra-long grains, a distinct aroma and becomes fluffy and separate after cooking, making it ideal for biryani and pulao. Normal rice varieties usually have shorter grains, less aroma and a softer texture, better suited for everyday steamed rice and khichdi-style dishes.

Generally, 1/4 to 1/3 cup of uncooked rice per person is enough for most meals. For biryani or rice-based main courses, you may increase it slightly. Consider appetites and side dishes; larger servings are needed if rice is the primary dish on the menu.

Soaking rice before cooking is recommended, especially for biryani and long-grain varieties. Soaking for 20–30 minutes helps grains absorb water evenly, cook faster and turn longer and fluffier. It also improves texture and reduces chances of breaking or becoming mushy during cooking.
