Plan your wall layout and calculate the number of bricks required. Soak the bricks in clean water for 10–15 minutes before use. Prepare quality cement-sand mortar with proper ratio. Lay bricks in straight lines using a level and string. Maintain uniform joints, remove excess mortar and cure the brickwork with water regularly.

For house construction, the best bricks are those with high compressive strength, uniform size and low water absorption. Well-fired clay bricks are widely preferred because they provide durability, good thermal insulation and strong bonding with mortar. Always choose quality-tested bricks from a reliable supplier for structural safety.

The number of bricks needed for a 1000 sq ft house depends on wall thickness, design and openings for doors and windows. On average, you may need around 8,000–10,000 standard size bricks. It is wise to consult your engineer or mason and add a 5–10% margin for breakage and wastage.

In India, the commonly used standard modular brick size is 190 mm x 90 mm x 90 mm, and with mortar joints it becomes 200 mm x 100 mm x 100 mm. Some regions still use slightly different traditional sizes, so always confirm dimensions with your bricks supplier before final quantity estimation.

Among regular building bricks, well-burnt first-class clay bricks are considered strongest due to high compressive strength and low water absorption. Engineering bricks and some solid concrete blocks can offer even higher strength for special applications. For normal residential construction, quality first-class bricks are usually strong and reliable enough.

To check brick quality, ensure they have uniform color, sharp edges and no major cracks. When struck together, good bricks produce a clear ringing sound. Drop a sample from about one meter; quality bricks should not crumble easily. Also verify low water absorption and adequate compressive strength through basic tests or lab reports.
