Select a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Dig a pit about 1.5 x 1.5 feet and mix soil with well-rotted manure. Plant the teak plant upright and firm the soil around roots. Water immediately, then regularly for the first 2–3 years. Keep weeds away and maintain proper spacing between plants.

A teak plant (सागवान) grows moderately fast in suitable conditions. In the first 2–3 years it mainly develops roots and height, then thickens into a strong trunk. With good sunlight, well-drained soil, timely watering and weed control, it can reach commercial timber size in about 15–20 years.

Teak plants thrive in warm, tropical to sub-tropical climates with distinct dry and rainy seasons. They prefer temperatures between 20–40°C and plenty of sunlight. Well-drained, deep soils with moderate rainfall are ideal. Waterlogging and heavy shade should be avoided to ensure healthy teak plant growth and straight trunks.

In the first few years, give your teak plant regular watering, especially in summer, and keep the area weed-free so it doesn’t compete for nutrients. Add organic manure annually, avoid waterlogging, and protect young plants from grazing animals. Proper spacing and sunlight help the teak grow straight and strong.

For teak plantation, spacing is usually 8x8 feet or 10x10 feet, depending on your land and management plan. Wider spacing allows better sunlight, thicker trunks and easier maintenance. Proper distance between each teak plant (सागवान) improves airflow, reduces pest issues and helps trees develop uniform, high-quality timber.

Teak generally takes 15–25 years to reach good commercial size, depending on soil, climate and care. Some farmers may do thinning earlier to remove weaker trees. Well-managed teak plantations with correct spacing, fertilization and protection can yield high-quality, straight timber with better market value at maturity.
